The Djembe is an iconic West African instrument. The bodies of these drums are carved out of a single piece of tree trunk. The hollow, goblet-like shape of the djembe allows for a resounding bass to sound, while the narrow bottom section amplifies and projects volume. On top, the djembe’s head - traditionally a piece of shaved goat skin - creates a crisp high-pitched tone when struck. With its unique blend of different sounds layered in a simple design, it’s no wonder that the djembe has remained a sacred part of various West African cultures for centuries!
