The Dogon people of West Africa inhabit the Bandiagara plateau of Mali. Most of their villages are established on cliffs, where water is scarce. These skilled farmers, who primarily cultivate millet and wheat on the tops of these cliffs, store their precious crops in large, secure granaries.
These hand-carved doors, adorned with faces, animals and other designs, traditionally protect each family's granary. Pests and thieves are kept at bay - not just with the simple sliding lock, but by the carvings themselves. These powerful designs often honor the Ancestors of the family, beloved deities, and other specific invocations of prosperity & protection.
