Hand-beaded by the gifted Ndebele Women Artists of South Africa, these vibrant figures represent a rich culture of tradition and feminine empowerment. These dolls, with their colorful and meticulously detailed beadwork, are created to honor two important stages of a woman's life. During courtship, the suitor places one of these beautiful dolls outside of a young woman's door. This lets her know that he intends to propose marriage.
Upon accepting the proposal, the bride-to-be's maternal grandmother secretly begins to create another doll. After the wedding ceremony, when the bride first enters her new home, she is ritually presented with the second doll. This brings her the blessing of fertility, and safe passage from maidenhood to motherhood.
Size: Small dolls are approximately 3 1/2" x 2". Large dolls are approximately 5" x 2 3/4".
