The Ashanti (also known as the Asante people) of Ghana are renowned for their influential artistic traditions. One of the most famous examples of Ashanti art comes in the form of these unique fertility statues.
These hand-carved wooden statues, called Akua'ba, are sacred symbols of matrilineal power & creation. The flat, round head and narrow body honor Ashanti ideals of feminine beauty: a high forehead, long neck & graceful shape. These dolls, which are intended to be carried at all times by the woman seeking fertility, are dressed and treated like a real child. Once a child has been conceived, the doll is respectfully added to the house altar to continue its blessings of protection.
We welcome you to come and see the amazing selection of traditional Akua'ba at 612 rue Dumaine, order your own here, or call us at 504.522.2111 for more information. Blessings Y'all!
Size: Each hand-carved doll is approximately 12" H x 6" W.
