For hundreds of years, the Cajun people have respected and honored alligators. In Louisiana, gators are not only an integral part of our ecosystem; they’re powerful symbols of protection, courage, longevity and resilience.
The first use of alligator leather to make boots, shoes, and other items was recorded in the early 1800s, but every part of this incredible animal is traditionally utilized and honored in Cajun culture. A gator head placed by the door is said to guard the household from danger and negativity. Other parts, from the teeth to the claws, can be worn in jewelry, carried on a key ring (as seen here), or used in Gris Gris Bags to attract good luck, strength and protection.
